Some children who fail to learn are from the most chaotic, disadvantaged families, and have already had limited school experience. The amount of help available to families on the edge through depression, mental illness, cultural exclusion and addiction is limited, unless they reach a stage of abuse where a child may become the subject of a child protection investigation. The quality of nursery teaching is even more critical when considering disadvantaged families and the need to give a child the chance to rise above their negative experience.

The worker made a point of getting to know Monique and of not rushing into correcting her, especially not in front of the other mums.
