Before going to Haverford, I had wanted to study the effect of a radial temperature gradient on the stability of viscous flow. The corresponding roots for the Bessel functions had to be computed; and Donna started on this, while trying to complete at the same time her long continuing calculations on polarization. During spring, a number of odd things were cleared. First there was the paper on the polarization of the sunlit sky. The calculations had been completed some months earlier and during my absence in Haverford, Donna had typed the tables.

But given the macroscopic description, it was not difficult to work out the stability theory. This is what I did. The two papers which resulted were sent to the Royal Society in February 1957. In December, news arrived of being awarded the Rumford Medal and premium. This was a source of some encouragement after a year of frustration. I prepared my Rumford lecture very carefully; and when I went to Boston to receive the award on March 13, I had the lecture all written up (which was later published in Daedalus).

Martin Schwarzschild who was present at this colloquium was clearly irritated by my frivolity; and at the end of the talk, he told me on our way back to Prospect Avenue that he did not like my frivolity; and in any event what was I going to do about it! This was like throwing cold water on my face: and I began to think seriously once more about the subject; and I was to continue thinking about it during the rest of the spring and summer months. Returning from Princeton, I concentrated on my second inhibition paper and by July all six papers which I had wanted to complete on my return from England had been written.
